The Project - Republic Bank, Guyana, Turns To SOL Solar Outdoor Lighting.
Republic Banks newest branch outlet in Diamond, Guyana is testing SOL solar outdoor lighting for its
outdoor area lighting needs. In doing so they achieve three things:
1. Reduced installation cost: This particular installation required lighting a substantial site and the
avoidance of switchgear costs, trenching costs (at approximately US$50.00/linear foot), and
contractor costs more than covered the SOL solar outdoor lighting solution.

2. Reduced maintenance costs and increased reliability: Traditional lighting systems need
replacement light bulbs every 2 years and replacement ballasts every 5 years with the attendant
labour/contractor costs. SOL solar outdoor lighting has warranties of 20 years for the photo
voltaic panel, 10 years for the light fixture and electronics, and 5 years on the battery. Guyana’s
existing experience with these batteries (in their solar traffic lights) is for an expected lifetime of
8-10 years when properly maintained (source: Ministry of Works, Guyana). SOL solar outdoor
lights are designed and programmed to light for 5 nights without being charged for 4 days; a
situation which is unimaginable in Guyana.
3. Reduced energy bills: With energy consumption of nil this compares favourably with the
alternative traditional solution of a 400w metal halide floodlight.

For those of you that are lucky enough to live near Georgetown, Guyana take a drive to Diamond and
have a look. But don’t drive by; stop, get out of the car and have a look under the light of the SOL solar
outdoor lights. These SOL fixtures use the highest technology LED’s which generate masses of light in
the specific direction required. This statement implies all kinds of positive things but one of the things
that this SOL light does not do is produce waste light. There is no appearance of brightness created by
this light, and no glare to passersby, only an abundance of usable light on the ground where it is needed.
One interesting thought; what will the neighbours say when there is a power outage and Republic
Diamonds lights are always working?
