The Project - Hi Lo Petit Valley Up Grade
Client – Hi Lo Food Stores
Architect – Alison Grosberg – Designworks
Project Manager – Sarah Jane Kidman
The brief from the client was to transform the space from the existing format into
an up-market contemporary supermarket. On entering the supermarket the
customer should get a warm, inviting feeling and during the shopping experience
all products must be well illuminated and “pop”….to use Sarah Jane’s exact words.

To help achieve this effect the Architect and client decided to change its
traditional lighting method which used 400w Metal Halide Low Bay to suspended
fluorescent direct/indirect fixtures. They also wanted to significantly increase the
light levels on the items at the at the parameter of the supermarket, like produce,
frozen food and smoked meat cabinets.
The Product
ALERA – CVSL 60’ 2T8 CM48 EU MW
After meeting with the client it was decided that the ALERA CVSL 2 x 32w T8 in a
continuous 60’ run will provide the desired look and provide excellent illumination in
the shopping isles. Suspended 7’ from the ceiling and 11’ from the floor ALERA was
able to provide maintained lumens of 50fc in the shopping isles and 60fc on
the shelves.

ALERA comes standard with quick connect mounting brackets for easy instillation
and seamless joints between sections. This type of lighting is often used in retail but is
more commonly seen in office applications. Options available that will add
significant value to the end used in office applications are dimming ballasts,
occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting sensors.
PRESCOLITE – AKTHLCE218
Along the parameter of the store Prescolite Wall Wash track lights with each with
2 x 18w High Lumen lamps were installed. The resulted in an increase in light levels
from 50fc to 70fc on the cabinets. This is a 40% increase and the products
on these shelves definitely “pop” off the shelves into the shopping carts.

Delivery
As with all projects, meeting deadlines and speedy delivery is not negotiable. It was
mentioned that due to the very short lead time, specialised lighting as mentioned
earlier (7 x 60’ Continuous runs of the ALERA CVSL) will not be able to be delivered
on time. However, with ALERA’s 10 day shipment programme on a wide selection of
fixtures it was delivered 3 days before the deadline. The order was placed, shop
drawings received, product manufactured and delivered of our forwarder
in Miami in 8 working days.
Specifiers Quick Tip
When specifying suspended fluorescents try and stick to 8’ or 12’ runs as much as
possible. A single 4’ section could be as much as 75% of the cost of a single
8’ section.
